Twenty-three first-year students of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) have received scholarships, annual cash grants and digital learning devices under the Airtel Africa Foundation Scholarship Programme.
The beneficiaries were presented with the awards on Tuesday during the inauguration of the university’s 39th Students’ Union Executive Council.
Each recipient received an annual grant of N500,000, a brand-new laptop and enrolment in a structured mentorship programme that will run throughout the duration of their undergraduate studies.
The scholarships will be renewed annually until graduation, provided each beneficiary maintains a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.5.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Acting Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Alex Morenikeji Akanmu, said the initiative was concluded during the tenure of the immediate past Students’ Union President, Adelu, following a rigorous and transparent selection process.
Presenting the laptops alongside the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, the Airtel Nigeria State Business Manager, Mr Latif Lawal, disclosed that the University of Ilorin recorded the highest number of beneficiaries among the six Nigerian universities selected for the scholarship programme.
According to him, the emergence of 23 successful candidates from UNILORIN reflects the institution’s strong academic culture and the outstanding quality of its students.
The Airtel Africa Foundation Scholarship Programme is designed to support academically outstanding students through financial assistance, digital learning resources and mentorship, enabling them to excel throughout their university education.
