At a time when Nigeria’s power sector demands stability, technical competence and strategic continuity, the leadership of Engr. (Dr.) Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz at the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) stands out as a compelling case for sustained stewardship. His first substantive term as Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer has delivered measurable improvements that directly impact grid stability, transmission capacity and national economic productivity.
Appointed as substantive MD/CEO of the Transmission Company of Nigeria in 2022 after serving in acting capacity, Dr. Abdulaziz brought decades of technical and managerial experience within the transmission subsector. That institutional memory and engineering depth have proven invaluable in strengthening Nigeria’s national grid.
Under his watch, the grid recorded one of its longest periods without system collapse, reflecting enhanced operational discipline and improved coordination across regional control centers. Such stability is not accidental; it is the product of deliberate investments in preventive maintenance, real-time system monitoring and improved grid management protocols.
Perhaps more significantly, Nigeria’s transmission wheeling capacity has expanded considerably during his tenure. From the previous threshold of about 6,000 megawatts, the grid’s capacity has risen toward 8,700 megawatts, positioning the country to transmit higher volumes of generated power as generation assets come on stream. The recent record peak transmission of over 5,800 megawatts underscores a system that is gradually aligning capacity with national demand.
Infrastructure expansion has also accelerated. Dozens of new power transformers have been installed and commissioned, adding thousands of megavolt-amperes to the grid. New substations, upgraded transmission lines and donor-supported projects valued at over a billion dollars are reinforcing the backbone of Nigeria’s electricity supply chain. These are not abstract figures; they translate into reduced bottlenecks, improved load management and greater resilience against system disturbances.
Beyond hardware, Dr. Abdulaziz has driven digital upgrades that enhance visibility and responsiveness across the network. Modern monitoring systems and improved operational tools have strengthened TCN’s ability to anticipate faults and respond swiftly to disruptions. Institutional harmony within the company has also improved, ensuring that workforce stability complements technical reforms.
As Nigeria advances power sector reforms and navigates structural transitions within the transmission landscape, leadership continuity is not merely desirable; it is strategic. Large-scale infrastructure transformation requires consistency of vision and steady execution. Interrupting ongoing reforms at this critical juncture risks slowing momentum and undermining hard-earned gains.
Engr. (Dr.) Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz has demonstrated that competence, transparency and engineering-driven leadership can yield tangible progress in a sector long plagued by systemic challenges. For a nation seeking improved electricity services as a catalyst for industrial growth and socio-economic development, his continued leadership offers stability and forward momentum.
If the promise of renewed hope in Nigeria’s power sector is to be sustained, then proven leadership at the transmission helm must not be treated as expendable. Continuity at TCN is not about personality; it is about performance. And on the strength of his first-term record, Dr. Abdulaziz has earned the confidence required to keep the grid — and the nation — moving forward.
