The Kwara State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has pledged partnership with a civic advocacy group, One Kwara Agenda, in sensitising citizens on the importance of merit and competence in leadership recruitment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The state Chairman of NUJ, Abdullateef ‘Lanre Ahmed, gave the commitment while playing host to a delegation from One Kwara Agenda led by its Convener, Comrade Olufemi Adetola, in Ilorin on Friday.

Ahmed underscored the need for collective responsibility in addressing what he termed “the leadership question” in Kwara State, stressing that the gains recorded under the current administration must be consolidated through credible succession.

He commended the advocacy group for its principled stance on merit-based leadership, adding that the NUJ would establish a joint committee with the group to drive the campaign across the state.

“Kwara was created 58 years ago. By now, we should not be caught with the practice of choosing leaders on primordial sentiments. What should matter is competence, capacity, and credibility—regardless of religion, economic status or region. This is our own belief as we move closer to the 2027 elections,” the NUJ Chairman declared.

In his remarks, One Kwara Agenda Convener, Comrade Adetola, expressed gratitude to the NUJ for embracing the initiative.

He described the advocacy as a “thankless but necessary task,” revealing that much of the group’s activities have been sustained through members’ personal contributions.

Adetola appealed to the people of Kwara to rise above divisive sentiments and focus on electing leaders with vision, character, and competence to take the state to greater heights.
