Oyo State has been urged to take proactive measures to address security and socio-economic challenges, with a particular focus on improving rehabilitation services for low-income groups and enhancing collaboration among security agencies. These recommendations were part of the resolutions issued at the end of a one-day Stakeholders Engagement Workshop held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.
The workshop, organized by the Oyo State Mobilisation Agency for Socio-Economic Development (OYMASED), was centered around the theme, “Security in Our Roads, Safety in Our Neighborhoods.” The event brought together security experts, government officials, and key stakeholders to discuss pressing issues related to security, road safety, and socio-economic development in the state.
One of the key resolutions from the communique emphasized the need for the Oyo State government to create affordable and accessible rehabilitation homes and facilities for vulnerable, low-income groups. The workshop participants also advocated for stronger cooperation among various security agencies to enhance security efforts in the state. They recommended the institution of regular collaborative meetings and training sessions to foster a more integrated approach to security.
Additionally, the communique called for stricter law enforcement to improve road safety and reduce the high number of accidents on Oyo State’s roads. Participants proposed that the government consider automating the identification of traffic offenders through the installation of cameras on roads, as well as setting up a system for the payment of fines within 48 hours.
The issue of drug abuse was also addressed, with the workshop urging the constitution of a body to review the Borstal Institutions and Remand Centre Act of 1961 to facilitate better rehabilitation for drug abusers. Participants suggested that schools implement drug detection kits to identify and discourage drug abuse among young people at an early stage.
Furthermore, the workshop called for the creation of a comprehensive database and the use of Artificial Intelligence to monitor and track road users and traffic offenders. This technological initiative was seen as essential for improving law enforcement and traffic management in the state.
On the issue of event management, the communique stressed the need for better crowd control during public gatherings. It called on event organizers to designate a leader to oversee and coordinate the event, ensuring the safety and well-being of attendees before, during, and after the event.
In conclusion, the workshop participants called for a concerted, proactive approach to address the security and socio-economic challenges facing Oyo State. They urged the state government to implement the proposed measures, noting that collaboration between government, security agencies, and local communities would be key to achieving sustainable progress in these areas.
